Health Watch — Best Face Forward: Whiter Smiles

Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about putting your best face forward — what you can do to make your face look more attractive. A big part of what makes you look good is your smile. There are a number of products available today to help you get brighter, whiter teeth for a prettier smile.

Dr. Kathia Steel, a dentist in the oral surgery department at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you should talk to your dentist before using these products, especially if you have crowns or fillings. These surfaces might not be affected by the whiteners, so they’d become more obvious after teeth are whitened.

Instead of bleaching kits, you might try whitening toothpastes, which will whiten more than regular toothpastes. And, of course, see your dentist regularly for a professional cleaning and check-up.
