2013 SECC drive raises over $312,000

The 2013 State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) at UT Southwestern Medical Center raised more than $312,000 for local and national charities. The total raised by UT Southwestern will make a significant impact on many individuals and families in North Texas.

Dr. Gordon Green, Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Pediatrics, extended his gratitude for the altruism demonstrated by UT Southwestern faculty and staff. The campaign overcame several hurdles, including a new registration system, personnel changes, and the abundance of other ongoing charitable activities on campus.

“I am grateful for your sustained commitment to this endeavor and your participation and support for this year’s State Employee Charitable Campaign,” Dr. Green said.

Across campus, UT Southwestern employees worked within their teams and departments to create fundraising initiatives and develop fun, working relationships with colleagues. The Accounting and the Sponsored Programs Administration departments at UT Southwestern, for example, raised nearly $2,200 through several fundraisers in October, including pancake breakfasts, lunch plates, ice cream socials, jeans days, candy buffets, and raffles.

The most successful moneymaker for the partnership was its pink ballerina hippopotamus fundraiser, contributing 64 percent of the total amount raised. Employees cast one dollar ballots for the management candidate they most wanted to see wear the pink hippo costume.

The winner was Tom Champagne, Interim Director of Sponsored Programs Administration. He graciously donned the costume for an entire day – visiting UT Southwestern departments, posing for pictures, and participating in the First Steps Costume Parade. His outfit included a pink tutu, a hippopotamus headpiece and tiara, and a sign that let the entire campus know that he was “proud to wear this costume in support of the SECC.”

Kimberley Martin, head of the SECC committee for the Sponsored Programs Administration, said the reappearance of “Madame Helen Hippo” in future fundraising efforts is assured. “The pink hippo costume contest will definitely become a tradition in our department. It was so much fun and everyone enjoyed it – even Tom.”

The State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) recently concluded its 20th year, marked by surpassing $10 million raised for charitable organizations. The SECC was created to give employees of state agencies, junior and community colleges, and universities throughout Texas the opportunity to donate to many of their favorite charities conveniently and confidentially through payroll deduction in an annual workplace giving campaign.

More than 500 charitable organizations benefit from the donations of state employees each year. Participating charities are evaluated on a variety of parameters in order to be included in the SECC program. For more information, please visit www.secctexas.org.
