Entries sought for writing contest open to medical professionals

Medical professionals and medical students are invited to submit essays, poems, or short stories about their experiences in medicine to the Literature + Medicine Conference writing contest.

Entries should relate to experiences working with patients, delivering difficult news to family members, or balancing work and personal life. Essays and short stories must be 5,000 words maximum; poetry should be 42 lines or less. Winners in each category will receive $250, while one grand-prize recipient will win $500.

The contest is open to physicians, professors, medical professionals, pre-med and medical students, residents, interns, and hospital trustees and administrators. Deadline for entries is Sept. 15.

Winners will be announced Oct. 24 at the fourth annual conference, hosted at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas and sponsored in part by UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Literature + Medicine Conference explores compassion and science at the bedside.
