The Intersection of Education, Research, and Clinical Care
At UT Southwestern, we focus on providing the highest level of neurological care for our patients, conducting innovative research, and training the next generation of neurologists. Our close ties with the Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute at UT Southwestern allow us to leverage shared resources to support a range of unique programs within the department and across our growing medical center.
With Dr. Elan Louis as our Chair, we are home to "Merritt's Neurology," one of the premier and longest-standing neurological textbooks in the country.
Our faculty are deeply committed to our educational mission, and we host 11 fellowship programs.
"Neurology Boot Camp" and "Art of Neurology" are two programs specifically designed to enhance resident education.
Neurology has a long-standing tradition of providing a dynamic, progressive, and engaging learning environment for our students, residents, and fellows. Our education programs are led by highly qualified, committed, and nationally recognized faculty.
The Department is firmly committed to neurological and neuroscience research. We are home to 31 research labs (17 wet bench and 14 dry bench) and 1 in 3 faculty are PIs of NIH grants. Our large faculty are well-resourced basic, clinical, epidemiological, and translational investigators. They maintain a sizable and diverse portfolio of research grants and contracts that span the spectrum of neuroscience research.
Our work touches the lives of thousands of patients each year who come to us from Texas, our surrounding states, and further afield. Our interdisciplinary clinics and team of passionate international experts provide cutting-edge treatment to a very large and diverse patient population. Social responsibility is a core value UTSW Neurologists act locally upon through our decades-old partnership with Parkland Hospital, one of the nation's busiest safety net health systems.
