The Neurostimulation Lab in the UT Southwestern Medical Center Department of Psychiatry is focused on furthering the development and utility of neurotherapeutic interventions for use in scientific investigations and clinical practice. With this emphasis, our Lab combines state-of-the-art neurotherapeutic interventions with advanced methodological paradigms to implement sophisticated translational investigations of neuropsychiatric diseases.
Mustafa Husain, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Internal Medicine. As a founding member of the Consortium for Research in Electroconvulsive Therapy (CORE), Chief of Electroconvulsive Therapy Services at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and an expert member of the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on Electroconvulsive Therapy, Dr. Husain has established the Neurostimulation Division as an internationally recognized scientific research center.
Involvement in Education and Training
The Neurostimulation team is dedicated to the advancement of education and training. It provides formal training opportunities in the knowledge and application of neurotherapeutic interventions including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), magnetic seizure therapy (MST), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). Learning opportunities are available and individually tailored to all levels including undergraduates, medical students and residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members.
Involvement in Research
The Neurostimulation team within Psychiatry is comprised of multiple laboratories performing clinical and translational research investigations in the use of neurotherapeutic interventions to understand and treat major affective disorders. These research investigations span neuropsychiatric diseases including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and major affective disorders with psychotic features. Our specialized laboratories were established to capture all forms of information such as neurophysiological, neurocognitive, neuropsychiatric, and clinical and functional outcomes.
Involvement in Patient Care
As a recognized center for neurotherapeutic intervention research, our team works with other academic and community centers to promote the advancement of knowledge on these methods for research and clinical practice.
