Biography

W. Phil Evans, MD, FACR Professor of Radiology Director of the Center for Breast Care George and Carol Poston Professorship in Breast Cancer Research Dr. Evans is the Director of the UT Southwestern Center for Breast Care. He joined the UT faculty in March 2002 as Director of Breast Imaging and became Director of the Center a year later. In September 2003, he was named the George and Carol Poston Professor in Breast Cancer Research. He serves as a member of the UT Cancer Center Executive Committee, Komen Center for Breast Cancer Research Steering Committees and is the Chairman for the Center of Breast Care Executive Committee. Dr. Evans received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas and completed his internship and residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Evans is board certified in diagnostic radiology and a Fellow in the American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging. His interest in breast imaging began in 1980 and led to the development of the Susan G. Komen Breast Center at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas; first dedicated breast center in Texas, opening in 1984. He served as Medical Director and Director of Breast Imaging of the center from 1984 to 2002. He established a breast imaging fellowship in 1991 and served as its director until 2002. Dr. Evans is a board member of the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria, Mammography and Ultrasound Reviewer Committees and Chairman of the Stereotactic Biopsy Accreditation Committee. He has served as an examiner in Breast Imaging for the American Board of Radiology. In addition, Dr. Evans is an active volunteer in the American Cancer Society. He is serving as a member of the National Board. Dr. Evans is also the Director for the High Plains Division for the American Cancer Society. Currently he serves on the National Breast Cancer Council, International Activities Advisory Committee, Income Development Committee, Stakeholder Relations Committee and its subcommittees on Business Practices and Charter Negotiation. Dr. Evans’ clinical research interests are in the fields of percutaneous biopsies of breast lesions, digital imaging, computer-assisted detection of mammographic lesions and breast MRI. He is the principal investigator for the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) at UTSW. Dr. Evans and his wife, Laurie, enjoy traveling and spoiling their grandchildren, Jack and Sydney.
