Science in 60+: Strong Beginnings

A new study from UT Southwestern shows a targeted cognitive behavioral therapy can help parents whose babies spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) overcome persistent fears about their child’s health.

Parents of premature babies often leave the NICU with lingering fear about their child’s health, even after medical recovery. Published in Pediatric Research, a study led by Margaret Hoge, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, is the first to show that an intervention could lower parental perceptions of child vulnerability (PPCV), a critical factor in a child’s development. In this Science in 60+ episode, researchers explain how a brief, trauma-informed therapy program helps parents reframe perceptions of vulnerability, reduce stress, and build confidence after discharge.
