Brotherly love at UT Southwestern Medical School
{Video opens with the following text fading in one sentence at a time:
Two Nigerian brothers immigrated to the U.S. in 1997. They were 5 and 7 years old. Little did they know, they would ultimately land on the same path to becoming doctors. UT Southwestern Medical School made it possible.
The voice of Kingsley Oladeji is then heard as photos of him and his younger brother play. After a few seconds, the brothers appear on-camera sitting side-by-side each other in an emergency room exam room. Both brothers are members of the UT Southwestern Medical School Class of 2018. Photos of them from childhood through modern day are weaved in throughout the entire video.}
Kingsley: I’ve known him since forever and so I don’t think there’s anything that we wouldn’t do for each other. Hi. My name is Kingsley Oladeji.
Philip: My name is Philip Oladeji.
Kingsley: And we’re brothers.
Philip: We were born in Nigeria, and we moved to London in ’94. My mom worked her way up.
Kingsley: She was trying to get a better opportunity for us as a family.
Philip: We eventually were able to get a visa to go to the United States.
Philip: We were both nurses before we went to medical school and when we were doing nursing, we found ourselves interacting with patients a lot and them asking us questions that [we] didn’t know the answer to. That drive to kind of figure those questions out was what kind of pushed us to go into medical school.
Kingsley: UT Southwestern gave us everything that we needed and all the resources that we could ever ask for.
Philip: Definitely grateful for UT Southwestern being able to surround me with great people.
Kingsley: Going through medical school with my brother has been a great experience. Hopefully when we’re done with our training we can inspire others to pursue this dream and also help others as much as we can. Match Day is the time where you get to see the results of all your hard work. It’s been the day that we dreamed of since we started med school. It’s going to be a joyful experience for my mom.
Philip: I think our family is very strong and whenever there is a victory for one person, it’s a victory for the whole family.
{Video ends with a slow zoom into a photo of Philip and Kingsley wearing their UT Southwestern white coats. Each brother has an arm around their smiling mother.}
