Vanessa Thomas: 30 Years
Unit Secretary
7 Blue/Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU), William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital
First UTSW job: Patient Care Technician.
Best part about my job: What I enjoy most about being a Unit Secretary is the opportunity to multitask while supporting both patients and staff. I take pride in creating a positive environment by assisting others with a smile. Each day brings new opportunities, and I find fulfillment in helping staff members have smoother, more efficient shifts.
How co-workers describe me: My colleagues often call me “Sunshine” because of my positive attitude and ability to uplift others. I am a team player who genuinely enjoys working with people and contributing to a supportive workplace.
Best UTSW memory: One of my most memorable experiences was working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), especially when we had holiday cookouts. The late Gary Burgess, M.D., former NICU Medical Director, would cook for the staff and bring back beads from New Orleans, creating a warm and memorable tradition.
My proudest UTSW accomplishment: I take pride in effectively supporting patients and their families by helping them access needed services. Collaborating with nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel to respond to patient needs has been especially meaningful.
Surprising fact: Although I am known for my positivity, I am naturally quiet and shy.
Hobbies and other interests: I enjoy traveling with my family. I am married with three children and six grandchildren. I am also proud that two of my children have earned college degrees.
