Mycah Freudiger, M.D.: Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Award

While attending college, Dr. Mycah Freudiger began working as a medical scribe in an emergency room. That’s where she became mesmerized and knew from that point forward the field was meant for her. In her words: “I loved the people, the pace, the dynamism, and the breadth of the physiology.”

Mycah Freudiger, M.D.

What this award means: This award is meaningful because being a successful emergency medicine resident/physician has been a long-term goal of mine. It is an honor to receive recognition for the time and effort I’ve put into this dream. I love this field and cannot wait to start working!

Mentor comment: Through her role as the Emergency Medicine (EM) Interest Group co-President and involvement in multiple research projects in the Emergency Department, including several examining the utility of point-of-care ultrasound, Mycah has proved her dedication to emergency medicine. She performed quite well as a sub-intern during her rotation in EM, and she clearly possesses the skills required to become a great emergency physician. – Mary C. McHugh, M.D., Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Clerkship Director

Background and family: I grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I attended Abilene Christian University before moving back to Dallas for medical school. I have three older siblings who work in finance and a niece and a nephew in the area. My parents are small-business owners and hairstylists in Bedford, Texas. I am the first in my family in medicine!

What led to your career path: I fell in love with emergency medicine during college while working as a scribe in a community ER. I loved the people, the pace, the dynamism, and the breadth of the physiology that each unique patient presents when walking in the doors. I tried to keep an open mind in medical school, but nothing felt quite like home as the ER! Working in the ER is a unique opportunity to be there for people at their most vulnerable. It is a privilege to show up for people on their worst days and walk beside them as they get through it. ER physicians are the safety net for the community, and it is an honor to be the first point of contact for so many.

College: I majored in biology, with a minor in Spanish, graduating summa cum laude. I also served as LGBTQ support group President and worked as a medical scribe in the emergency department (ED) for three years, which is when I first became introduced the ED.

UTSW activities: I served as co-President of the Emergency Medicine Interest Group, Simulation elective facilitator, Ultrasound Interest Group President, and as Pride Social Chair.

Surprising fact: I just got a new puppy, whose name is Reese! Our daily walks are the highlight of my day. She loves peanut butter Kongs, squirrels, and fetch.

Future plans: After completing my residency at the University of California at San Diego Medical Center, I hope to pursue a fellowship in either EMS or addiction medicine.

About the award: The SAEM Award is given annually to a senior medical student for demonstrating excellence and commitment to emergency medicine.
