C. Munro Cullum, Ph.D.: 30 years

Professor, Vice Chair, and Division Chief
Departments of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neurological Surgery
Division of Psychology
First UTSW job: I was recruited as Associate Professor of Psychiatry in 1994 to develop clinical, research, and educational programs in neuropsychology. As such, I spent most of my time in the clinic, with most referrals coming from neurology and neurosurgery, with an emphasis on neurodegenerative disorders and epilepsy.
Best part about my job: I enjoy all aspects of my career here and have for the past 30 years. Early on I focused on clinical service development and seeing patients, and over the years I have transitioned to an emphasis on research, administration, and education.
How co-workers describe me: A friendly, collaborative team player, mentor, and leader. I’m also optimistic, dedicated, and have a good sense of humor.
Best UTSW memory: One that stands out is the rock ’n’ roll band we have had in the Department of Psychiatry for almost as long as I’ve been here (fun fact: I’m the drummer). While we’ve been advised not to give up our day jobs, it’s been so much fun playing music with faculty friends over the years.
My proudest UTSW accomplishment: It is definitely the many trainees I have had over the past 30 years. It is a pleasure to watch them grow and develop productive, rewarding careers that help patients and advance research and education. Along these lines, I am very proud of the national reputation we have collectively built for our neuropsychology programs.
I’m really good at: I wouldn’t say that I’m “very good” at it, but I have been told I’m a decent drummer. If you ask my family and friends, however, I am probably better with puns and humor.
Hobbies: It may sound cliché, but I truly love spending time with my family! I am an extremely fortunate husband (43 terrific years … so far, so good!), father of two amazing adult children whom we love hanging out with, and the grandfather of an adorable toddler and her baby brother. I also enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and learning guitar.
Surprising fact: Some people might be surprised to know that I am a native Texan who has been riding motorcycles for over 55 years (and yes, I am fully aware of the apparent paradox of being a neuropsychologist motorcyclist!).
