The white paper plate was speckled with nothing but crumbs as graduate student researcher Peter Burnham finished his last bite. It was safe to say he enjoyed his Hot Chick pizza with smoked chopped chicken, provolone cheese, and serrano peppers.

“I appreciate any opportunity to choose from additional dining facilities,” Mr. Burnham said.

North and South Campus felt a festive new vibe as UT Southwestern ushered in a food truck frenzy last week. As trucks pumped out pop music across North and South Campus, the crowds began to grow. Employees and students lined up, patiently but eagerly waiting to sample the new fare. View photo gallery.

The food trucks are part of a pilot program that Auxiliary Enterprises rolled out to provide four extra campus dining options on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 11 a.m-2 p.m.

“The participation numbers exceeded expectations and the vendors were wowed,” said Director of Auxiliary Enterprises Brian O’Grady. “Support from students and staff has been great and will help drive the program to become permanent.”

The program kicked off Wednesday, Sept. 12, with Tacos, Bites & Beats and Tutta’s Pizza serving North Campus, while Rockn’ Rick’s and Sir Frank’s Fancy Dog and Sausage Truck served South Campus.

“I’m pleased so far and I’d like it if they would continue,” said Dr. David Hendrixson, Associate Professor of Microbiology, who enjoyed tinga tacos from Tacos, Bites & Beats on opening day.

The next day, Jack’s Chowhound and 7 Sisters arrived to feed the crowd at North Campus while SkewU and Sandwiches Around the World by Chez Flo took on South Campus. The second round of trucks may have created a few regulars as some employees came out both days to savor the experience.

“I’ve never tried food trucks and it’s awesome that I can do it at work,” said Katrina Donelson, a Supervisor of Animal Care in the Animal Resource Center who ordered a Philly cheesesteak sandwich with garlic fries from Sandwiches Around the World by Chez Flo.
