Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the elderly in western countries. The disease affects more than 20 million Americans, and 1.75 million individuals suffer from the advanced stage of AMD, which causes irreversible vision loss.
The goal of our research lab is to identify the early steps in the pathogenesis of AMD, and to investigate the novel methods to treat and even to prevent its development.
Our lab approaches AMD from two vantage points:
- Basic scientific research to assess the role of lipid oxidation in the development of AMD
- Clinical study to develop a more sensitive test for screening and monitoring the development of AMD
