ConTex Team

ConTex includes a team of internationally and nationally recognized leaders in concussion research and care, representing sports medicine, neurology, sports neuropsychology, and neurosurgery representing the participating institutions. This multidisciplinary approach allows for the comprehensive study of concussion diagnosis, risk factors for prolonged recovery, and evaluation and management strategies. Knowledge from these studies will guide best practices to improve the long-term health of student and adult athletes in Texas and beyond.

Munro Cullum, Ph.D.

Munro Cullum, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neurological Surgery at UT Southwestern, is the principal investigator of ConTex. Dr. Cullum is a neuropsychologist who has been involved in concussion research and care for several decades. He is the President of the Sports Neuropsychology Society and consultant for the Dallas Stars and Dallas Cowboys.

Kathleen Bell, M.D.

Kathleen Bell, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UT Southwestern, is a Co-PI of ConTex and an internationally known researcher and clinician specializing in traumatic brain injury.

Nyaz Didehbani, Ph.D.

Nyaz Didehbani, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UT Southwestern, is a Co-PI of ConTex. Dr. Didehbani is a neuropsychologist with research interests in concussions across the lifespan. She serves on the Executive Board for the Sports Neuropsychology Society and is a consultant for the Dallas Stars.

Shane Miller, M.D., F.A.A.P.

Shane Miller, M.D., F.A.A.P., Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Pediatrics at UT Southwestern and Co-PI of ConTex, is a pediatric sports medicine physician at Scottish Rite for Children Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center. He currently serves as a team physician for local high schools and the Dallas Stars.

Mathew Stokes, M.D.

Mathew Stokes, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at UT Southwestern, is a Co-PI of ConTex. Dr. Stokes is a pediatric neurologist specializing in sports neurology and concussion care for adolescents and college athletes.

Danyah Ahmed, B.S.

Danyah Ahmed, B.S., Clinical Data Specialist at UT Southwestern for ConTex and the Dallas Hearts and Minds Study. She's particularly interested in the psychological aspects of concussions. Danyah's long-term goal includes acquiring a Ph.D. in counseling psychology with a focus on mental health in children and adolescents.

Stephen Bunt, Ed.D.

Stephen Bunt, Ed.D., Instructor at UT Southwestern. Dr. Bunt is a Certified Athletic Trainer with over 40 years of experience in sports injury care, especially care related to concussions. He leads the Care4Kids project at UTSW. He has published research covering concussion symptomology across all age and genders, effect of resilience on concussion recovery, and psychological impact of concussions.

Hannah Doggett, M.A.

Hannah Doggett, M.A., Research Assistant at UT Southwestern to Dr. Mathew Stokes and ConTex study coordinator. Hannah is early in her career and has a goal of attaining a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. She is interested in various psychological factors related to concussions, specifically suicide risk and trauma/stressor related disorders following an incident.

Cason Hicks, M.S.

Cason Hicks, M.S., Clinical Research Coordinator at UT Southwestern, contributes his efforts to a number of studies across the institution. While his work is focused mainly on the ConTex study under Dr. Cullum, he also provides support for research in amnestic MCI, former professional athletes, and a quality improvement project for high school athletes participating in UIL sports across the state.

Ingrid Tamez, B.A.

Ingrid Tamez, B.A., Clinical Data Specialist at UT Southwestern and ConTex study coordinator to Dr. Munro Cullum. Ingrid has a B.A. in psychology and plans on one day pursuing a Ph.D. in counseling psychology. She is interested in learning more about concussions and how they affect a person psychologically.

Sebastian Chowdhury

Sebastian Chowdhury, B.A., Clinical Research Assistant at UT Southwestern and study coordinator to Dr. Munro Cullum. Sebastian has a B.A. in Psychology, with the goal to pursue an M.D. in Neurology. He is interested in investigating the physiological effects of concussions to optimize diagnostic criteria for patients.

Bobby Van Pelt

Bobby Van Pelt, M.P.H., Clinical Research Coordinator at Scottish Rite for Children Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center and ConTex study coordinator for Dr. Shane Miller. Bobby supports numerous studies for the sports medicine department at Scottish Rite for Children and is interested in the long-term psychological impact of concussions on athlete performance.
