Life-sustaining treatment for brain tumors

UT Southwestern has established seven Centers of Excellence for brain tumor care, providing the most effective and comprehensive treatment strategies to help patients. Our physician-scientists have produced life-sustaining results through innovative research, clinical trials, surgical techniques, and precision radiation oncology.
Elizabeth Maher, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Neuro-Oncology, and her multidisciplinary team played a vital role in research that led to the Food and Drug Administration’s approval in 2024 of a breakthrough drug called vorasidenib for the treatment of low-grade gliomas. Dr. Maher’s dedication and nearly 20-year pursuit of discovery is having a direct impact on the lives of patients and their families.

Toral Patel, M.D., Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery, is exploring the use of a novel nanoparticle to deliver radiopharmaceuticals to the brain, and she is an expert in laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), a minimally invasive treatment option for those living with brain tumors or epilepsy.
“As a neurosurgeon at an academic medical center, I have the opportunity to offer my patients advanced surgical care and innovative treatments,” Dr. Patel said. “I’m also able to engage in research with colleagues. This combination supports our goal of changing the way we treat brain tumors and improving outcomes for patients.”
