A conversation with Dr. J. Gregory Fitz about new medical school curriculum

 

Dr. J. Gregory Fitz, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Dean of the Medical School, recently discussed UTSW’s new medical school curriculum, which will guide the education of students beginning their studies in August 2015.

Dr. Bogar Garcia: Texas College of Emergency Physicians Award

 

When Dr. Bogar Garcia was in his junior year at UT Arlington, he was one of three undergraduate students selected to do a summer preceptorship in the Emergency Department at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Luwam Ghidei: Iatros Award, and the Southwestern Gynecologic Assembly Award

 

Dr. Luwam Ghidei won the 32nd Iatros Award – the only award from UT Southwestern Medical School voted on by the members of the graduating class – because she displayed so many of the qualities of a successful physician.

Dr. Kristin D’Silva: Dr. Richard Mays Smith Award in Internal Medicine

 

Dr. D’Silva is the 2015 recipient of the Dr. Richard Mays Smith Award in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Niyatee Samudra: American Academy of Neurology Medical Student Prize for Excellence in Neurology

 

Dr. Niyatee Samudra spent years as a volunteer, activist, and counselor, developing a passion for neuroscience as a Dean’s Research Scholar studying hippocampal abnormalities in psychosis disorders in conjunction with Dr. Carol Tamminga.

Dr. Natalie Sciano: Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Award

 

During her second-year Emergency Medicine Department rotations, Dr. Natalie Sciano found that the four-hour shifts seemed to fly by. Afterward she had difficulty sleeping due to her excitement. The more rotations she did, the more she enjoyed them.

Students take on teamwork, aging issues at Convergence Day 2015

 

Students pursuing health professions converged in late March for a half-day educational event aimed at promoting teamwork at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Nabeel Shakir: John D. McConnell Award for Excellence in Urology

 

Dr. Nabeel Shakir has always been curious about how things work. This quality, combined with an ability to work well with people, led to his recognition as recipient of the 2015 John D. McConnell Award for Excellence in Urology.

Dr. Christopher R. Ball: Vanatta, Hesser, Schmalstieg Excellence in Tutoring Award

 

Having an interest in the functions and processes of the brain along with a strong desire to help people are two great qualities to have as someone who studies radiology.

Dr. Emily Saultz Bowen: Hemphill-Gojer Award, and the Lorraine Sulkin-Schein Medical Student Award in Geriatric Medicine

 

Dr. Emily Saultz Bowen had two choices for her college sorority community service requirement: nursing home or playground. Most chose playground, so she decided to tackle the less-popular assignment. It was a decision that would change her life.
