Rosenberg to discuss Alzheimer’s vaccine at Oct. 29 President’s Lecture

 

For more than a decade, Dr. Rosenberg and his laboratory staff have been working on a vaccine that targets beta-amyloid, a protein that forms plaques in the brain and is believed to be both a sign and a cause of Alzheimer’s.

Longtime faculty member Kenkel named new Chairman of Plastic Surgery

 

Dr. Jeffrey Kenkel has been named Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Kenkel, Professor of Plastic Surgery, has served as Interim Chair since July 2014 and previously served as Vice-Chair of the Department.

More than 50 artists who are part of the UT Southwestern Medical Center community were recognized recently at the 15th Annual “On My Own Time” reception, held at the A.W. Harris Faculty and Alumni Center on the South Campus.

STARS offers lofty campus participation

 

The 2015 Science Teacher Access to Resources at Southwestern (STARS) summer research program allowed 40 high school students and 10 teachers from Dallas-Fort Worth area schools to take part in programs and projects in laboratories across UTSW.

In Memorium – Dr. James H. “Red” Duke Jr.

 

Dr. James H. “Red” Duke Jr., who graduated from UT Southwestern Medical School and went on to become a renowned surgeon, medical educator, and Texas icon, died Aug. 25 at age 86.

Biochemist who searches extreme environments to hold Steiner Professorship

 

Dr. John MacMillan, Associate Professor of Biochemistry, has been selected as the inaugural holder of the Martha Steiner Professorship in Medical Research. Dr. MacMillan searches for new antibiotics and cancer therapies by studying aquatic bacteria.

Dr. Ludwig A. Michael: Professor Emeritus of Otolaryngology

 

Dr. Ludwig A. Michael, a noted physician and Professor Emeritus of Otolaryngology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, died on Oct. 1. He was 96.

Radiation therapy program director selected

 

Kameka Rideaux, a veteran of 14 years in radiation therapy services in Texas, recently became Program Director of Radiation Therapy for the UT Southwestern School of Health Professions.

Exercising two to four times minimum levels progressively reduces risk of heart failure

 

Exercising at double or quadruple current recommended minimum levels significantly reduces the risk of heart failure, a study by UT Southwestern Medical Center cardiologists found.
