The metabolite composition of biomolecular condensates

Recent studies on the composition of biomolecular condensates suggest that the primary components are proteins and nucleic acids. However, the presence of other biomolecules such as amino acids, sugars, metabolic intermediates, and enzyme co-factors in condensates has not been explored. My project aims to understand the metabolite storing capacity of biomolecular condensates in vitro and in vivo using a combination of mass spectrometry and cellular imaging, with a goal of learning general, predictive principles by which protein and nucleic acid composition determines small molecule composition. Ultimately we hope to develop a complete, quantitative understanding of the biochemical properties and resultant functions of biomolecular condensates.
