The general surgery residents recently took the ABSITE (American Board of Surgery In-Training Exam), which is designed to assess their progress as residents. In preparation for the exam, residency Associate Program Director Deborah Farr, M.D., put the residents through rounds of “Jeopardy.”

Just like in the real game, residents earned points for their responses and got the chance to zero in on any weak spots in their knowledge.

“We have them play ‘Jeopardy’ each year in January for the four weeks before the ABSITE,” Dr. Farr explains. “The questions are written in part to cover areas that are always on the test in addition to questions that many of the residents have gotten incorrect on the question bank that we purchased for them. They usually have a good time.”

Games and competitions are common ways that the UT Southwestern surgery residency program challenges its residents. Associate Professor Adam Yopp, M.D., has long been a supporter of this educational tool. He also regularly serves as a judge for another competitive event in the residency program. The Top Knot Challenge, the brainchild of Dr. Farr, is both a team-building exercise and another way for the surgery residents to test their skills.
