Announcements

Courtney Balentine, M.D., served as a reviewer for the bioengineering, technology, and surgical sciences study section of the National Institutes of Health.

Ryan Dumas, M.D., discussed trauma video review during a webinar for the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma on February 18, 2021.

Carla Holcomb, M.D., served as a co-moderator for Clinical Outcomes in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery quickshot session at the annual meeting of the Association for Academic Surgery on February 3, 2021.

Dr. Holcomb was also selected to represent the Surgical Society of the Alimentary Tract on the joint task force for foregut fellowship certification. The task force will create certification requirements for foregut surgery and is a collaboration between three surgical societies (the aforementioned society, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery).

Benjamin Levi, M.D., was chosen to represent the American Burn Association on the new equity, diversity & inclusion committee of the Coalition for National Trauma Research.

Dr. Levi has also been elected for membership into the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Madhuri Nagaraj, M.D., was accepted into the Surgical Education Research Fellowship (SERF) program sponsored by the Association for Surgical Education.

Fiemu Nwariaku, M.D., was the Roslyn Lecturer for the Society of University Surgeons at the annual meeting of the Academic Surgical Congress on February 4, 2021. The title of his lecture was How to Train Your Dragon: Education of the Surgeon Scientist.

Javier Salgado Pogacnik, M.D., was elected as regional vice president of the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons for 2020-2022.

Grants

Michael Dellinger, Ph.D., and Joshua Scallan, Ph.D., received a grant from the Department of Defense for Repurposing MEK-Inhibitors for Lymphatic Malformations. 

Michael Dellinger, Ph.D., and Benjamin Levi, M.D., and his lab received a grant from the Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense for Targeting Lymphatics to Treat Trauma-Induced Heterotopic Ossification.

Dr. Levi and his lab also received a grant from the above-mentioned program for Immunotargeting and Metabolic Therapeutic Strategies to Improve Muscle Recovery After Severe Trauma.
