CK-MB measurement is of limited clinical value in the setting of acute coronary syndrome

Jaehyup Kim M.D., Ph.D. and Ibrahim Hashim, Ph.D.

In a publication appearing in this month’s Clinica Chimica Acta, Drs. Ibrahim Hashim, Professor of Pathology, and Jaehyup Kim, Resident in Clinical Pathology, show that CK-MB has been misused in acute coronary syndrome. Retrospective medical chart review of over 1,200 cases indicated that with the availability of contemporary, high sensitivity Troponin assays, CK-MB measurements are of limited value and should be avoided as an initial screening test in patients with suspected ACS.
