NEW Neuroimmunology Fellowships
The Neuroimmunology Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center offers fellowships in two tracks: Multiple Sclerosis and Autoimmune Neurology.
Fellows in both tracks have an option for the length and focus of their fellowship:
- One-year fellowships focus on patient care
- Two-year fellowships focus on clinical research and academic development
- Three-year fellowships support applicants who wish to pursue training in both clinical and basic science
Multiple Sclerosis Track
Fellows in the MS track will be trained in clinical and translational research. The Perot Foundation Neurosciences Translational Research Center provides support that allows fellows to pursue novel research projects, and be mentored in the techniques and regulatory requirements for investigator-initiated studies. Fellows will be expected to actively participate in research and to publish during their fellowships.
The UT Southwestern Clinical Center for Multiple Sclerosis, Transverse Myelitis/Neuromyelitis Optica emphasizes a comprehensive approach to the triad of patient care, clinical and basic research, and teaching. The group comprises neurologists, advanced practice providers, clinical nurses, ophthalmology technicians, and a large research team.
This team cares for more than 5,000 patients from all 50 states and several countries, and is actively involved in multiple clinical trials that evaluate disease-modifying agents, symptomatic therapies, and new diagnostic and prognostic criteria.
We are actively involved in studies aimed at understanding neurodegeneration and neuroprotection utilizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other neuro-ophthalmologic assessments that characterize retinal damage following optic neuritis.
The Adult MS Clinical Center at UT Southwestern comprises labs for ocular motor and optic nerve physiology, equipped with state-of-the-art retinal-imaging technologies. The Parkland and VA Medical Center locations are incorporated into comprehensive neurology outpatient clinics. The Children’s Health MS Center is located in the Children’s Health℠ Specialty Center Dallas Campus, and includes a dedicated pediatric ophthalmologic laboratory equipped with visual acuity testing and OCT equipment.
The Neuroimmunology Program includes programs dedicated to transverse myelitis, neuromyelitis optica and autoimmune encephalitis. These clinical and clinical research endeavors attract patients and families from around the world to receive care. It includes adult and pediatric programs.
The CONQUER Program, (Collaboration on Neuroimmunology: Question, Understand, Educate, Restore) includes four recognized Comprehensive MS Centers, two transverse myelitis clinics and two autoimmune encepahlitis clinics located across:
The fellow is trained in evaluation and management of a wide spectrum of neuroimmunology conditions, including multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, neuromyelitis optica, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, optic neuritis, anti-NMDA antibody encephalitis, autoimmune encephalitis, paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, autoimmune autonomic syndromes, sarcoidosis, and CNS vasculitis.
The fellow will see patients in the following settings:
- Neuroimmunology clinic in the faculty private practice at the James W. Aston Ambulatory Care Center.
- Neuroimmunology in the General Neurology clinic at the Ron J. Anderson, MD Clinic.
- Neuroimmunology Clinic in the Children’s Health℠ Specialty Center Dallas Campus
- Neuroimmunology consults at Parkland hospital, Children’s Health℠, William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, and the Zale Lipshy Pavilion.
- The fellow can participate in a variety of ongoing clinical research projects. Our fellows traditionally present abstracts at national and international meetings including AAN, ANA, ACTRIMS, ECTRIMS, and CMSC.
