Master of Science in Health Informatics

About the Program

The opportunities for Health Informatics training at UT Southwestern are extensive, comprehensive, challenging, and will prepare you for a career at the interface of health care and technology. Our faculty are dedicated to providing an outstanding education for those who will shape the future direction of health care.

You will study the best ways to create and deliver knowledge to clinicians and patients, when and where needed. You will innovate, optimize, and modify care processes and provide safeguards to protect patients, systems, and providers.

Our goal is to transform students who are passionate about health informatics into health informatics professionals who will use their skills, knowledge, and passion to improve individual health, health care delivery, public health, and biomedical research.

What to Expect

The Master of Science in Health Informatics program will provide students with the interpersonal, cognitive, analytical, and applied skills needed to thrive in the field of health informatics.

Students will build on skills already obtained through their previous education in medicine, health, computer science, or information technology and gain knowledge from educators with firsthand knowledge of systems and system challenges. Graduates will initiate meaningful change and be multidisciplinary leaders in the field of health informatics.

  • Recommended Professions and Areas of Study

    Clinicians

Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, and other ancillary health professionals interested in either taking on a leadership role in health information technology or already in a position of leadership with a desire to expand knowledge and skills.

    Information Technology Professionals

Professionals with expertise in information technology or health information management including analysts, programmers, project managers, or privacy and security professionals interested in applying their existing expertise to the field of health care.

    Computer Scientists

Professionals with a degree in computer science who want to leverage their knowledge and skills in developing or validating models, usability, and human-machine interfaces in health care on health data and systems.

    Data Scientists

Experts in analyzing, cleaning, modifying, interpreting, and converting data for knowledge discovery and with statistical skills, who want to work inside the health care system and leverage the data generated in the process of care delivery.

  • Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on 10 domains determined by the American Medical Informatics Association and includes a range of foundational courses and electives.

  • Research

The Capstone research experience is designed to allow the students to acquire real life experience, translate newly acquired academic knowledge into projects, and leverage evaluation, data analytic, and other scientific methodologies in the evaluation of the project by partnering with a faculty member or an operational team at UT Southwestern or another institution.

  • Program Format

    Full-time: 2 year program

    Part-time: 2.5 year program

  • Clinical Informatics Research Colloquium

The Clinical Informatics Center at UT Southwestern hosts a bimonthly Clinical Informatics Research Colloquium to highlight the great work done at UT Southwestern in the clinical informatics space. This is part of our effort to bring clinical informatics, research informatics, and other data and informatics scientists together at UT Southwestern to foster exchange of ideas, collaboration, and development of grants, papers, and novel projects.

Meet the Program Director

The delivery of health care in the United States has changed dramatically in the last decade through the use of electronic health records (EHR) in health care delivery. As a result, more data are being generated and collected regarding clinical care, patient reported outcomes, population health, care delivery processes, and health system operations than ever in our history. The unprecedented availability of data opens novel opportunities to leverage data in our efforts to generate knowledge and improve health and wellness for humanity.
