How to Apply for a J-1 Research Visa

To apply for J-1 visa classification, a prospective visitor must receive Form DS-2019 from the Office of International Affairs and, if outside of the U.S., use it to apply for a J-1 visa stamp at the nearest U.S. consular post.

If currently on a J-1 research visa at another U.S. institution, their current institution will electronically transfer their record to our office and we will provide the DS-2019 form to the visitor during their initial International Affairs check-in appointment.

In either case, the Office of International Affairs must receive a complete and correct application package from the sponsoring department and prospective visitor as indicated below. The sponsoring department administrator or delegate should provide the electronic J-1 Prospective Trainee Application to the visitor to be completed and returned to the department.

Upon receipt the department contact must submit both the J-1 Departmental Application and the J-1 Prospective Trainee applications to the Office International Affairs (scanned, electronic copies are fine.)

If the visitor is abroad, please initiate the process at least 2-4 months in advance. Otherwise, please allow 1 to 2 months processing time.
