Research in the neurological sciences is a multidisciplinary effort with contributions from clinical and laboratory-based investigation. The research effort in the Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is in a phase of rapid growth. The past five years has seen the development of preeminent laboratories in the areas of neuroimmunology (Multiple Sclerosis), neurodegenerative disorders (ALS, Alzheimer's), ion channels / cellular excitability, and muscle metabolism. Clinical research is actively underway in identifying risk factors for dementia and cognitive impairment, acute and preventive management of stroke, immunotherapy for MS, drug therapy in Parkinson's and other movement disorders, outcome measures in epilepsy, rehabilitation after spinal cord injury, and treatment trials in spinal muscular atrophy and muscular dystrophy.
