The Cancer Immunobiology Center houses 60 individuals with dual appointments in Microbiology, Pathology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or the Center for Immunology. The 10 faculty members develop immunologically-based agents for the therapy and diagnosis of cancer, GVHD and autoimmune diseases. They also work on vaccines and study cancer dormancy and molecular events in carcinogenesis. The 18,500 sq. ft. Center houses a BSL3 lab, a GMP Biotherapeutics manufacturing lab and state-of-the-art equipment for molecular, cellular, and clinical immunology. A Director of Clinical Trials is a faculty member in the Center. Scientists interact with individuals in many basic and clinical departments on campus to translate new discoveries into clinical practice. Phase I/II Clinical Trials are carried out on site and at ten institutions across the country on FDA-approved INDs. Peer-reviewed grants have been obtained from the NIH, from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Texas Coordinating Board, the Department of Defense, the Arthritis Foundation, the Welch Foundation, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and from several pharmaceutical companies.
Support Staff consists of research associates, a scientific support manager and an administrative staff. Members of the Center participate in several graduate programs in the Division of Basic Science, the MSTP program, and are involved in teaching medical and graduate students.
