| The North Texas Burn Rehabilitation Model System (NTBRMS) including Parkland Health and Hospital System (PHHS) and the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical center (UTSW) is internationally renown for its top quality comprehensive program of care, rehabilitation, and research involving children and adults who sustain major burn injury. In 2007 NTBRMS was funded by the Department of Education to continue research in the rehabilitation of burn survivors. In 2002 NTBRMS proposed 5 research projects (2 collaborative and 3 site specific): 1) Barriers to return to work following major burn injury, 2) Long term outcome following major burn injury, 3) Outcome following deep full thickness hand burns, 4) Burn associated neuropathy: Evolution over time, 5) The socioeconomic determinants of disability in individuals with burn injury. Each of these projects link directly with several areas of the NIDDR long-range plan. These projects were completed in 2007.
Collaboration occurs on many levels at the NTBRMS. Clinical collaboration is the hallmark of the burn team, which includes individuals from several institutions who work together seamlessly as well as collaboration with our rural care providers through rural clinics and our biannual seminar. Research collaboration occurs locally with the surgeons and academic computing and nationally with the other model systems.
