Welcome to the website for the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians, also known as physiatrists, specialize in restoring function after an illness or injury. Our staff uses an interdisciplinary team approach to deliver compassionate quality health care through an individualized treatment plan. The Department provides services at facilities across the UT Southwestern Medical Center Campus including University Hospital, University Hospital – Zale Lipshy, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and Children’s Medical Center as well as the Dallas VA Medical Center. Specializing in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disabilities in individuals affected by stroke, brain injury, burn injury, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular disorders, musculoskeletal disease, pain and other conditions that limit mobility and function we are dedicated to providing comprehensive rehabilitation, acute inpatient, and outpatient services. PM&R faculty are actively involved in both clinical and basic science research in the areas of burn injury, pain, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke, and electrodiagnostic medicine. The PM&R residency program at UT Southwestern offers clinical experience and research opportunities in addition to didactic course work. There is a balance of outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation experience, including subspecialty rehabilitation programs and electromyography.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Grand Rounds and Residents' Lecture Series are open to medical and healthcare professionals. The Annual Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Scientific Day and Phala A. Helm, MD Distinguished Lectureship is held in the spring each year. This continuing education course is designed to showcase the research and scientific presentations of our residents, fellows, and faculty. Each year a nationally renowned speaker presents the Helm lectureship as the highlight of the scientific day.
