Neonatal Intensive Care

UT Southwestern offers Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) care and technology for at-risk newborns, where neonatologists supervise care for all infants in the unit. Staffed by non-UT Southwestern physicians from Pediatrix*, UT Southwestern’s NICU provides support by encouraging parental involvement and providing a special suite where parents stay overnight and prepare to care for their baby before leaving the hospital. For more information, contact our Neonatal Care Medical Director, Gary Burgess* at (214) 645-5555.

*Note: These physicians are not employed by UT Southwestern.

Heart and Lung Transplant Program

Recognized for premier cardiovascular and pulmonary services, UT Southwestern's Heart and Lung Transplant Program is located in the St. Paul Building.

UT Southwestern physicians provide expert medical and pre- and post-surgical management of patients who are awaiting, or who have undergone, heart and/or lung transplantation. More than 300 heart transplants have been performed since the inception of the program in 1988. Survival rates for the first three years after transplantation are among the best in the country.

The lung component of the transplant program began in 1990. Physicians here have been especially successful in offering transplantation to patients with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease resulting in progressive lung destruction. The pulmonary division, with its pulmonary function laboratory, has physicians on staff with experience in managing cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial fibrosis and pulmonary neuromuscular diseases.
