Welcome to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and the Department of Internal Medicine. From its origin a little over 60 years ago as a tiny group under the chairmanship of Dr. Tinsley R. Harrison, the department has grown steadily in size and national distinction. It has always sought to be academic in the fullest sense of the word, with no neglect of teaching, clinical care or scientific investigation. Its operating motto is simple:
"We want to be better next year than we are this year. Nothing less. Nothing more."
Currently the faculty numbers 339 primary full-time faculty with 73 faculty from other departments holding secondary appointments. The primary faculty includes three members of the National Academy of Sciences and four members of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy. Its secondary faculty includes two Nobel laureates. Twenty-nine faculty are members of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and 22 are members of the Association of American Physicians. There are 155 house officers and 209 fellows in training.
Included in our web site are introductions to the past chairmen, Dr. J. Gregory Fitz, Dr. Daniel Foster and Dr. Donald Seldin, our three vice chairmen Dr. Daniel Goodenberger, Dr. Gary Reed and Dr. Jonathan Weissler as well as the chiefs of each of our divisions. We will also provide links to the residency training program, and updated calendars and scheduled conferences, including Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.
Sincerely,
Dwain Thiele, M.D., Interim Chairman
The Jan and Henri Bromberg Chair in Internal Medicine
