Message from the Chairman
Welcome to the home page of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Here you will find information about our clinical, investigative, and educational programs.
Our Mission is to provide an environment and tools that promote the accomplishment of the following goals:
1) To provide comprehensive dermatological care for patients with skin disease.
2) To increase our understanding of normal and pathological processes in skin.
3) To facilitate the growth of individuals, including medical students, resident physicians in dermatology and other specialties, research fellows, junior faculty and staff personnel within the department
History: A Division of Dermatology at Southwestern Medical School was established in 1972 by James H. Herndon, Jr., and a residency training program was established three years later. In 1979, James N. Gilliam assumed the Chairmanship, and he facilitated the transition from Division to Department. Paul R. Bergstresser became Department Chairman after the unanticipated death of Dr. Gilliam in 1984. During the subsequent 23 years, a substantial expansion of clinical, investigative, and educational programs within the department resulted in national as well as international recognition. Kim B. Yancey, M.D. became department chairman in 2007 at the time Dr. Bergstresser assumed the Editorship of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Leadership: The department has become a leading academic center, having received numerous awards and recognitions for excellence in research, education, and patient care. In 1992, the American Academy of Dermatology gave it the prestigious Excellence in Education Award. Between 1992 and 2006, the department held one of six national, NIH-funded Skin Disease Research Center Grants; it currently ranks 6th nationally among departments of dermatology in NIH grant support. Members of the faculty play major roles in national research, service, and patient-advocacy organizations, including the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, Society for Investigative Dermatology, American Academy of Dermatology, and Association of Professors of Dermatology.
