June 27, 2008. The Smith Lab discovers a new mechanism for pheromone signaling. Dean Smith and postdoctoral fellow Tal Soo Ha, in collaboration with investigators at the University of Colorado, published an paper in Cell showing that a binding protein termed LUSH mediates activation of neuronal signals by a pheromone in Drosophila. This work demonstrates a new paradigm for the detection of odorants by insects. Read more in the UTSW press release or the Cell paper.

April 29, 2008. Department Chair and HHMI Investigator David Mangelsdorf is elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors attainable by American scientists. See the UT Southwestern news release or an article in the Dallas Morning News for details. 

January 18, 2008, 2 PM, ND8.218. Dissertation defense by Erin Willert from Meg Phillip's lab. The title is "The role of Trypanosoma brucei S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase in polyamine and trypanothione metabolism."

December 21, 2007. The Annual Alfred Gilman Awards were presented to Graduate Student Prashant Mishra (Ranganathan Lab) and Posdoctoral Fellow Maojun Yang (Yu Lab) at the Pharmacology Holiday Party. The program also included highlights of first author papers published from departmental laboratories (click here to view slide presentation).

December 14, 2007; 2 PM; ND7.218. Dissertation Defense by Patrick Ryan Potts from Hongtao Yu's laboratory. The title is "Functional Analysis of the Human SMC5/6 Complex in Homologous Recombination and Telomere Maintenance."

December 5, 2007. Postdocs Maojun Yang (Meritorious Research Award) and Jungseog Kang (Grand Prize), both from Hongtao Yu's laboratory were award winners at the UT Southwestern Postdoctoral Poster Competition.

November 2007. Graduate students Jacob Schwartz (Honorable Mention) and Randall Beane (Top Five Award), both from David Corey's laboratory won awards at the 2007 Graduate Student Organization Poster Session. Graduate student Zhu Wang from David Mangelsdorf laboratory received an award for one of the top six abstracts at the Sigma Xi research forum.

October 2007. Research from the laboratory of Dr. David Mangelsdorf  was featured in the October edition of the Center Times. Their findings that a byproduct of cholesterol metabolisms interferes the the beneficial effects of estrogen on the cardiovascular system were published in the October issue of Nature Medicine.

September 27, 2008, 2 P.M. in ND8.218. Dissertation Defense by Ahmet Cansizoglu from Yuh Min Chook's laboratory. The title is "Structural and Biochemical Studies of Nuclear Import Factor Karyopherin beta-2."

September 1, 2007. Work from the laboratory of Dr. Philip Thorpe appearing in the Sept. 1 issue of Clinical Cancer Research shows that the combination of radiation therapy and a novel drug previously developed in his lab are more effective in treating lung cancer than either treatment alone. Dissertation Defense - Prashant Mishra will present his dissertation defense seminar on Friday August 3 at 9 A.M. in ND13.218.. His title is "Dynamic scaffolding in a G-protein signaling cascade" and Rama Ranganathan is the mentor.

Dissertation Defense - Rahul Shah will be presenting his thesis defense seminar on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 3 P.M. in ND8.218. The title is "Structure and specificity of group IV PLP-dependent decarboxylases" and Meg Phillips is the mentor.
