The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences offers preparation for careers in medical (clinical) laboratory science through two different programs, the Medical Technology Program and the Blood Bank Technology Program. Students enrolled in the Medical Technology Program are offered training in all major areas of the clinical laboratory through classroom instruction and practical experiences. Students may pursue either a bachelor of science degree or, for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree, a post-baccalaureate certificate in medical technology. The Blood Bank Technology Program is a post-baccalaureate program for medical technologists who wish to specialize in blood-bank technology.
Medical Technology Program
A career in medical technology is a great way to combine an aptitude for science with the desire to help others. Medical Technologists, also known as clinical laboratory scientists, are highly skilled professionals who perform analytical tests on blood, tissue, and body fluids to provide laboratory information for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases. There also is a growing trend for medical technologists to perform wellness laboratory testing aimed at preventing disease.
The primary goal of the Medical Technology Program is to provide the community with medical technologists who are prepared to enter the health-care work force as qualified clinical laboratory practitioners and who meet the requirements for certification in their profession. Medical technologists are in demand in hospital laboratories, reference clinical laboratories, physician office laboratories, public-health agencies, university research laboratories, and in industry in laboratory, sales, and customer-support positions.

Blood Bank Technology Program
The Blood Bank Technology certificate program is currently not accepting applications.
The primary objective of the Blood Bank Technology Program is to offer training to individuals who wish to pursue a career in immunohematology. Students are instructed through lectures and clinical practica in subjects that include the theory of transfusion therapy, the principles of immunohematology procedures, and the management strategies used in an immunohematology laboratory. The curriculum also includes a research component that offers the student experience in planning, conducting, and presenting original research. Students enrolled in the program are offered clinical experience at several affiliated institutions including Blood Systems Laboratories, Carter BloodCare, and Parkland Health & Hospital Systems. Persons enrolled in the distance program will identify a mentor, clinical instructors, and locations for the clinical practice requirements outlined by the program.
Graduates of the Blood Bank Technology Program are qualified as technical consultants, administrators, educators, and clinical research technologists in immunohematology or transfusion medicine.
