The Clinical Center for the Surgical Management of Obesity (CCSMO) was established in 2000 to provide comprehensive clinical care for patients undergoing surgical therapy for the treatment of severe obesity. Obesity is a major health problem facing the United States in the 21st century, as over one-third of Americans are obese. Our mission is to provide multidisciplinary clinical care for bariatric surgery patients, to educate surgeons, primary care physicians, and nurses, and allied-health professionals regarding the indications, benefits, and techniques of bariatric surgery, and produce research into the pathophysiology and treatment of severe obesity. Patient Care A regional and national referral center for bariatric surgery, the Clinical Center for the Surgical Management of Obesity offers open, laparoscopic, and revisional bariatric procedures including the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Lap Band, as well as secondary procedures such as hernia repairs and panniculectomies. Complete, multidisciplinary care for the obesity surgery patient is coordinated through the center, including nutritional, psychological, and rehabilitative care. The center also sponsors bi-monthly support groups for pre- and post-operative patients. The surgeons at CCSMO perform over 350 bariatric and related procedures annually, at Parkland, Zale-Lipshy, and St.Paul, in addition to over 1500 annual clinic visits at the Aston Center. Education In conjunction with the Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, the CCSMO offers educational and training programs for surgeons interested in learning techniques in laparoscopic bariatric surgery and establishing a bariatric surgery program. Two day introductory courses and smaller week long mini-fellowships are offered throughout the year. CCSMO surgeons also have participated in many courses aimed at primary-care physicians, nurses, and allied-health professionals, teaching the indications and benefits of obesity surgery.
