Aims

  1. Assess the deep and superficial venous systems (e.g., common femoral, superficial femoral, profunda femoral, popliteal, posterior tibial, peroneal, greater and lesser saphenous veins, or subclavian, axillary, brachial, radial, ulnar, cephalic, and basilic veins). Directly or indirectly assess more proximal veins (e.g., iliac, vena cava, or innominate veins).
  2. Localize and characterize venous obstruction, collateral flow, and insufficiency.
  3. Identify pathology by evaluating ultrasound echo characterization and flow patterns.

Indications

Appropriate indications might include:

  1. Known or suspected deep or superficial vein thrombosis
  2. Chronic venous insufficiency or
  3. Venous mapping prior to coronary bypass surgery or peripheral vascular reconstructive surgery
