COURSE OVERVIEW
The 2010 Rare Neuroimmunologic Disorders Symposium is being hosted in Dallas, Texas for the first time. Over the last 10 years symposia have been held in Baltimore, Santa Fe and Seattle, bringing together patients, families, clinicians and scientists with interests in rare immune mediated disorders that affect the nervous system. The 2010 symposium will include two simultaneous programs, with the ability of participants to move between them as desired.

The basic science program will feature talks and discussions that will explore complex topics in novel ways with a goal of stimulating cross fertilization of ideas between different scientists.

The clinical program will feature talks geared towards patients, families and practitioners who are seeking out a greater understanding of disease biology, current treatment options and a preview of cutting edge research. The goal is to provide up to date knowledge on the diagnosis and management of diseases such as transverse myelitis (TM), neuromyelitis optica (NMO), and acute disseminated encephalopathy (ADEM). This will also be a platform for patients and caregivers to interact with other patients and with physicians.

TARGET AUDIENCET
The basic science program is intended for scientists, clinician-scientists, research fellows, graduate students and other researchers interested in the shared and unique immunopathogenic mechanisms in these rare disorders, and learning about emerging immune, neuroprotective and restorative therapies as well as novel imaging modalities.

The clinical program is intended to update primary care practitioners, neurologists, emergency medicine physicians, internists, family practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, gerontologists, rehabilitation physicians and other interested individuals regarding the diagnosis and management of these rare neuroimmulogic disorders.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

The basic science session will feature talks and discussions that will explore complex topics in novel ways with a goal of stimulating cross fertilization of ideas between different scientists.

The clinical sessions will include talks on various neuroimmunologic disorders, including transverse myelitis, neuromyelitis optica, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and pediatric multiple sclerosis. There will be presentations on disease management, symptom management, rehabilitation and research programs. There will be opportunities to question presenters, work in small groups, take part in moderated discussions, meet patients, families, clinicians and research scientists.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to link the educational
objectives to Core Competencies and:

  • Recognize shared and unique features in the pathogenesis of neuroimmunologic
    disorders
  • Identify common and unique targets for immunotherapy of related disorders
  • Establish collaborative research efforts based on similar pathophysiology of
    selected neuroimmunologic disorders
  • Disseminate proceedings of the meeting to educate the medical community
and to stimulate further research in these disorders
  • Identify current treatments and understand current research and potential future
    interventions
  • Recognize the issues of management of patients with such rare neuroimmunologic
disorders such as TM, ADEM, GBS, and NMO

ACCREDITATIONThe University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians

CREDIT DESIGNATION
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST
