WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Physicians, gastroenterologists, surgeons and other healthcare professionals who are interested in flexible endoscopic interventions and novel minimally invasive surgical techniques for gastrointestinal
and other diseases.
PURPOSE AND CONTENT
Through didactic lecture presentations and hands-on training, this three-day course will provide an overview and updates in various cutting edge areas of endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques. Topics will include in-depth presentations of advanced therapeutic endoscopy, NOTES, and SILS procedures. Intensive hands-on practice will be afforded in UT Southwestern’s state-of-the art facilities using inanimate and live animal training models, with direct mentoring from world-renown experts.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to link the
educational objectives to Core Competencies and be able to describe and discuss:
Advanced Endoscopic Therapies
- Endoscopic management of fistulas, leaks and perforations
- Endolumenal bariatric revision and procedures.
- Barrett’s ablations
- EMR and ESD
- Endolumenal therapy for GERD
- Endoscopic stenting: from the esophagus to the colon
- Advances endoscopic imaging techniques
Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES)
- Data generated from NOTES animal studies
- Current status of NOTES approaches in humans
- Hurdles and innovative solutions regarding endoscopic instrumentation
- Magnetic anchoring platforms for deployable instruments
- Technical considerations for transgastric, transvaginal, and transcolonic access
- Endoscopic and other modalities for imaging
- Strategies for tissue retraction during pure and hybrid NOTES procedures
- Techniques for NOTES cholecystectomy, sleeve gastrectomy, and other operations
Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)
- Data generated from SILS animal studies
- Current status of SILS approaches in humans
- Types and utility of articulating instruments
- The use of angled and articulating laparoscopes
- Strategies for avoiding instrument collisions
- Port types and placement for SILS cholecystectomy, adjustable gastric banding, colectomy, nephrectomy, and other operations
- Suturing and other strategies for tissue retraction
- Specimen extraction
ACCREDITATION
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
CREDIT DESIGNATION
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 22 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

DISCUSSION OF OFF-LABEL USE
Because this course is meant to educate physicians with what is currently in use and what may be available in the future, there may be “off-label” use discussed in the presentations. Speakers have bee requested to inform the audience when off-label use is being discussed.

REFUND POLICY
A $50 handling fee will be deducted from cancellation refunds. Refund requests must be received by mail or fax prior to August 28, 2008. No refunds will be made thereafter.
CANCELLATION POLICY
The Office of Continuing Medical Education reserves the right to limit registration and cancel courses, no less than two weeks prior to the course, should circumstances make this necessary.
