Applicants should have an undergraduate major in the sciences and must have a strong background in at least one of the following fields: physics, mathematics, chemistry. Applicants who have a Master’s degree in the fields of electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or computer science and wish to apply for a PhD in Radiological Sciences should also have completed undergraduate courses in the sciences listed above. The GRE scores should reflect mastery in verbal and quantitative areas and analytical skills. (A subject GRE may be requested.)
The Admissions Committee uses a number of criteria in evaluating applicants:
- Demonstrated intellectual abilities
- Strong background in physics, chemistry or mathematics; alternatively, mathematics and data analysis related coursework
- Motivation, expectations and career aspirations congruent with the nature of this program;
- Educational and research goals in line with program objectives
- Successful experience in a laboratory/research environment is a plus
The admissions committee reviews all applications and supporting documentation received by the program application deadline.
Applicants are evaluated on a competitive basis. All materials submitted with the online application are required for review. All information is pertinent, including the applicant’s personal statement, to determine if the applicant’s goals are congruent with the goals of the program. Review of applications and materials begin in January each year. All admissions are subject to approval by the dean of Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
The minimum requirements that must be met to be considered for admission to this program:
- A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training at a foreign university;
- Satisfactory grades (generally a minimum overall grade-point average of 3.0) in undergraduate and graduate course work.
- Original transcripts from every university ever attended
- 3 letters of reference (from previous employer, professor, lab manager, etc.)
In addition, the applicant must submit the score on the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test and request that the GRE scores be sent directly to the Admissions Office. The code number for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas is R6686-0.
Applicants must have taken the GRE within five years preceding the expected date of enrollment in the graduate school. GRE scores older than five years will not be accepted unless the applicant has recently been engaged in graduate study at this or another university.
The deadline for submitting completed applications is May 15; however, it is to the advantage of the applicant to apply earlier. Applications are accepted as early as Nov. 1. Students are admitted to the program in the fall semester.
