Each year students will present one seminar describing progress on their thesis project (WIPs) and one seminar focusing on a literature topic (JCs). Meetings are held at noon in L4.162.
Purpose:
Works-In-Progress (WIPs) are designed to provide a format in which students are encouraged to think critically about their own research and how it relates to a broader area of chemistry. In addition to generating feedback and suggestions for students regarding their research from a diverse audience, the WIPs provide experience with formal presentations, a critical skill in becoming a successful scientist. Faculty mentors attend regularly and assist in facilitating discussion of the research presented.
Journal Club (JC) presentations provide a forum for students to learn and describe an area of chemistry not directly related to their thesis topic. This forum will broaden students’ knowledge and sophistication regarding important areas in synthetic chemistry. Topics will be chosen by the student in consultation with the student’s thesis advisor. Postdoctoral fellows will also be provided an opportunity to present JCs.
By attending the Chemistry Evening Seminar series students will be familiarized with the research from leading laboratories and institutions.
Expectations:
All track students are required to attend the WIPs series weekly and to actively participate in the discussions. Additionally, students will present twice a year, as described above. More than 3 absences (for any reason) in any given semester will result in a grade of Unsatisfactory for this component of training.
