What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

The neuropsychological or neurocognitive evaluation involves an examination of brain function.  This is accomplished through the administration of a series of tests to provide descriptive, quantitative information about areas of cognition such as intellectual functioning, problem solving, language, visuospatial abilities, attention, memory and personality functioning.  With many neurological conditions, it is only through neuropsychological evaluation that we are able to determine what impact the disease process is having on patients' cognitive functioning (i.e., thinking) and ability to carry out everyday tasks. As noted by the Therapeutics and Technology Assessment Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology (Neurology, 1996; 47:592-599), neuropsychological assessment is an established and accepted procedure that is useful in the evaluation and diagnosis of various conditions affecting the brain.

It should be noted that neuropsychological assessment is different from psychological assessment. While both are conducted by psychologists, they involve different procedures and are conducted by psychologists with different areas of expertise. Accordingly, it should also be noted that the CPT code for Neuropsychological Evaluation (96117) falls under Neurology, not Mental Health, and thus, this procedure should be processed under patients' medical health benefits, not mental health.  If you need any further information regarding our procedures or other billing matters, please feel free to contact our office at 214-648-4646.
