Our department is actively involved in medical education here at UT Southwestern, and involved with student activities in a variety of venues. In addition to the required third-year clerkship in family medicine, our faculty co-direct the first year Clinical Ethics in Medicine course. Students can complete a family medicine preceptorship as a preclinical experience, a clinical elective, or as one of three choices to fulfill the Ambulatory Care requirement in the fourth year. Through our Division of Community Medicine, we offer community-based research experiences to students entering the medical school and those who have completed their first year. This experience also offers training in research methodology. Several faculty also provide research opportunities to preclinical students during the UT Southwestern Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship. A Community Medicine elective provides third and fourth year students the opportunity to tailor their experience to their own interests. And going beyond direct student teaching, we have faculty involved with the medical school's admissions and curriculum committees.
Outside of class, we sponsor the Family Medicine Interest Group, a group that is open to students from all years of medical school. The FMIG offers programs throughout the year including casting and suturing workshops, a "Surviving the Third Year" presentation, and panel discussions with faculty from various practice environments. Also, our faculty participate in various student organizations including the Spirituality in Medicine Interest Group, Medical Humanities Interest Group, and Southwestern Community Outreach (SCOPE).
