REQUEST FOR GRANT PROPOSALS

(NIH Grant number:  P30DK079328)

Pilot and Feasibility Grants (P&F Program) are being solicited by the UT Southwestern/ NIH O’Brien Kidney Center (UTSW O’Brien Center).  Deadline April 15, 2008 (extended deadline April 23, 2008).  Start date June 1, 2008.

Description of the P & F Program and eligibility of applicants:

The P&F Program provides modest research support for a limited time (one to two years) to enable eligible investigators to explore the feasibility of a concept related to the overall goals of the UTSW O’Brien Kidney Center and to generate sufficient data to pursue the concept through other funding mechanisms (e.g., NIH R01 grant).  The maximum amount will be $50,000 total direct and indirect costs per year.  No more than 10% of this may be used to support the PI’s salary and fringes.

The proposed studies must fall within the scientific objectives of the UTSW O’Brien Kidney Center and must utilize at least one Biomedical Research Core of the O’Brien Center.  The scientific goals of the UTSW O’Brien Kidney Center are to promote bidirectional interactions between basic scientists and clinical researchers to advance the understanding of kidney development and pathophysiology, which could lead to more effective treatments of kidney diseases.

  • Investigators who are eligible for pilot and feasibility funding generally fall into three categories:
  • New investigators without current or past NIH research support (R01, P01) as a principal investigator (current or past support from other sources should have been modest).  It is expected that the majority of the investigators will fall into this category.
  • Established non-nephrology investigators who wish to apply their expertise to a problem in this area.
  • Established investigators who propose testing innovative ideas that represent a clear departure from ongoing research interests.
  • All eligible investigators must have faculty appointments and must be independent investigators.  Postdoctoral fellows or their equivalent are not eligible.
  • Each pilot and feasibility study proposal should state clearly the justification for eligibility of the investigator under one of the above three criteria.
  • Pilot and Feasibility projects proposing clinical application of laboratory findings or laboratory investigation of clinical findings will be especially encouraged, since they will maximize the utilization of the Biomedical Research Cores and fulfill the overall goals of the Center.

All proposals should be submitted on the form pages for NIH grant application PHS 398.  More detailed instructions and specific form pages needed are on Instructions for Completing Request for Proposal.(this link O'Brien Center Request for Proposal Instructionswill take you to the instructions; click on it.)

Applications should be submitted by email, no later than April 15, 2008 (extended deadline April 23, 2008), as a Word document; email as an attachment to dedrian.copeland@utsouthwestern.edu.  Questions should be directed to Ms. Copeland.

Records:

The UTSW O’Brien Kidney Center is required by the NIH to maintain records of the subsequent career development of each P&F grant recipient.  This includes information about whether or not the recipient is active in the area of kidney research.  Faculty funded by the P&F Program are required to inform the UTSW O’Brien Kidney Center of the above.

Oversight of the funded P&F grants:

The P&F Committee (see above) will review the progress of each funded grant at least annually in conjunction with the Annual Research Symposium.  Recipients will be required to write a 2-page progress report.
