WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This symposium is designed to meet the needs of primary care physicians and other health care professionals who treat depressed patients.
PURPOSE AND CONTENT
This program presents an overview of the latest clinical and research findings in the treatment of depression, with a focus on new medication strategies, treatment of associated syndromes, and special populations. Practical information on screening, diagnosis, symptom management, and ethical decision-making also will be presented via didactic lectures, slides and handouts.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies and be able to: Explain how to effectively monitor suicidal ideation in conjunction with antidepressant use
Recognize treatment options in childhood depression
Describe the use of atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of depression
Describe treatment options for insomnia, anxiety, and fatigue in depression
Explain the role of co-morbid adult ADHD and depression in treatment considerations
Explain the ethical use of antidepressant treatments Describe the role of diabetes and depression in primary care
Describe the role of pain management strategies in depression
Interpret and apply the QIDS-SR for diagnosing and monitoring depression
ACCREDITATION
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
CREDIT DESIGNATION
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas designates
this educational activity for a maximum of 8 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, including 1 hour of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with
the extent of their participation in the activity.

DISCUSSION OF OFF-LABEL USE
Because this course is meant to educate physicians with what is currently in use and what may be available in the future, there may be “off-label” use discussed in the presentations. Speakers have been requested to inform the audience when off-label use is being discussed.
REGISTRATION
The registration fee of $65 entitles the participant to breakfast, breaks, lunch and all course materials.
REFUND POLICY
A handling fee of $25 will be deducted from cancellation refunds. Refund requests must be received by mail or fax prior to September 12, 2008. No refunds will be made thereafter.
CANCELLATION POLICY
The Office of Continuing Medical Education reserves the right to limit registration and cancel courses, no less than one week prior to the course, should circumstances make this necessary.
