The role of the consult liaison psychiatry service is to provide psychological and psychiatric care to patients being treated on medical/surgical floors of the hospital. This type of care includes medication management, bedside psychotherapy, and behavioral medicine interventions. An equally important mission of the service is to educate hospital staff about how to address both longstanding and acute mental health related issues that affect patients under their care.
Five faculty members (3 psychiatrists and 2 psychologists) oversee teams comprised of senior psychiatry residents, psychology interns, a psychosomatic medicine fellow, medical students, and other trainees. To optimize the provision of care, a nurse specialist, certified in psychiatry and addiction, manages the initial liaison with other physicians and triages patients based on their individual needs to the appropriate consult team. Finally, to enhance the continuity of care, a Master's level social worker facilitates mental health care funding, hospital transfers, mental health legal services, and mental health aftercare.
