The Women’s Mental Health Center was created to:

  • Improve detection of mental illness in women
  • Provide clinical care that is informed to the specific needs of women
  • Conduct research in areas of importance to the mental health of women
  • Provide training to medical students, residents, and health care professionals across disciplines about the mental health needs of women

Our clinical and research program focuses on:

  • Postpartum Depression
  • Depression and Anxiety during Pregnancy
  • Preconception and Pregnancy Planning for Women Using Psychiatric Medications
  • Perimenopausal Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder in Women

From the Director

Marlene_FreemanThank you for your interest in Women’s Mental Health!  The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center has a new Women’s Mental Health Center, and we appreciate the community’s interest in Women’s Mental Health!

In our Women’s Mental Health Center, we are striving to improve the detection and treatment of mental health in women.  We are focused on mood and anxiety disorders, particularly in the context of reproductive events, such as pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause (the transition to menopause).  We also aim to provide educational experiences about women’s mental health for medical students, residents, and health care providers across specialties so that women can receive care that is informed to their needs from the widest variety of providers and in as many settings as possible.
