The Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas has educated forensic psychiatric residents for over 15 years in collaboration with The Southern Methodist University School of Law. Our accredited program provides a broad range of academic, clinical, criminal and civil forensic psychiatric experiences which equip graduates to pursue successful careers in every aspect of behavioral science and the law. The program's schedule provides ample time for residents to work closely with our faculty of experienced forensic psychiatrists and psychologists work closely with residents throughout the year. Residents provide mental health services to County Jail and Federal Prison inmates, as well as to the Special Needs Offender Program, a jail diversion clinic for psychiatric patients. Also, fellows conduct competence to stand trial and insanity evaluations at Terrell State Hospital. Exposure to civil forensic psychiatry is unusually extensive program, with the resident participating in and sometimes functioning as the primary expert for personal injury, guardianship and divorce/custody cases.  Evaluations related to capital murder and other high profile criminal cases are frequent.  Consultation to Adult Protective Services is also a unique aspect of the program.  The resident is also provided with an opportunity to teach and mentor medical school students as part of our medical student education elective in forensic psychiatry. The present stipend is $51,812 per year. There are three weeks of paid vacation.

Admission Criteria:

Fellowship candidates must have satisfactorily completed an ACGME accredited psychiatry residency prior to entering the program. We accept two PGY-5 residents each year on a competitive basis. Eligibility for Texas medical licensure is a prerequisite for all candidates.
