Program Director: Sidarth Wakhlu, M.B.B.S.

The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center, inaugurated in July 2000, features both enriching educational experiences as well as the opportunity to become certified as an addiction psychiatrist. The problems of substance abuse, chemical dependency, and alcoholism constitute the number one public health problem confronting us in the new century. No specialty will be in greater demand than addiction psychiatry.

Fully accredited by ACGME, sponsored by one of the great medical centers of the era, and centered in a department recognized internationally in the addictions, the UT Southwestern Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship affords PGY-5's abundant opportunities to learn, practice, and develop as a researcher if so desired.  Service rotations include inpatient, outpatient, day treatment, and community psychiatry.  Experiences include adult, adolescent, and family approaches to treatment. Didactic seminars and close 1:1 supervision with key faculty are important features of the program.  Those interested in research careers in Addiction Psychiatry have access to a two year research fellowship that includes work with outstanding basic scientists focused on addictions and well established clinical researchers.

Dr. Eric Nestler, Department Chairman, and Dr. Bryon Adinoff, Distinguished Professor of Addictions Research, are internationally known in the addiction field. Contact between fellows and other distinguished faculty is abundantly available, including internal medicine, family practice, forensic and adolescent psychiatry, and other specialties.

With an abundance of clinical opportunities available in the Dallas Metroplex, the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship has wider horizons each year. Examples of the special experiences available include a rotation in a nationally recognized community psychiatry program designed for dual diagnosis patients; a rotation with one of the most effective methadone programs in the Southwest; experiences with psychiatrists and staff managing follow-up for prestigious programs like Betty Ford and Hazelden; specialized experience in consulting on addicted patients with non-psychiatric physicians, a program that specializes in addiction treatment for women including adolescents and pregnant patients, and side-by-side work with Drs. Adinoff, Talmadge and Wakhlu at the VA Medical Center, which offers veterans up to a year of treatment across the entire continuum of care.

The present stipend is $51,812 per year. There are three weeks of paid vacation.

Admission Criteria:

Fellowship candidates must have satisfactorily completed an ACGME accredited psychiatry residency prior to entering the program. We accept three PGY-5 residents each year on a competitive basis. Eligibility for Texas medical licensure is a prerequisite for all candidates.
