Goals of Medical Student Rotation in Orthopaedic Surgery
- Ability to take an orthopaedic history
- Proficiency in examination of extremities and spine
- Appropriate use of orthopaedic terminology
- Ability to describe x-ray findings accurately
- Basic understanding of the principles of musculoskeletal care
- Basic understanding of skeletal development
- Introduction to reconstructive joint surgery
- Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolus, fat embolus syndrome, compartment syndrome, infection, etc.
- Ability to perform minor procedures correctly: cast application, arthrocentesis, insertion of traction pins, etc.
- Ability to recognize conditions in which orthopaedic assessment and treatment should not be delayed.

Assignments will consist of 4 weeks with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical School on one of the six services.
- Sports Medicine, Trauma, General (A Service)
- Adult Reconstruction (B Service)
- Spine (C Service)
- Hand and Upper Extremity (D Service)
- Orthopaedic Trauma (E Service)
- Foot and Ankle (F Service)
Regular sessions with faculty will be held to discuss patients and review basic information. Student attendance is required.
Active participation by the student in the service responsibilities will ensure that practical material, such as casting techniques, minor procedures, and recognition of complications is learned during the rotation.
Students interested in a rotation with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern must complete and submit an application. This process is handled through the Office of Student Affairs; follow the instructions, and complete the indicated forms.
Along with the forms required by the Office of Student Affairs, please submit a copy of your USMLE Step-1 scores, a transcript showing your spring grades for your surgical rotations and a letter from your school outlining your malpractice coverage.
All paperwork should be returned to Menyon Menefee at the address indicated above.
