1. Attend the informational seminar. These seminars are held two or three times a month in Dallas and Ft. Worth, and last from one to two hours. During the seminar, you will learn about the procedure from one of our surgeons, receive a preliminary eye screening, and be able to ask the surgeon any questions you may have.
2. Decide if laser eye surgery is right for you. Consult our list of unbiased sources and financing options for more information to help in this decision.
3. Schedule an exam. This is where the doctor evaluates your eyes in-depth, determines whether you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery, and if so, which type of surgery would be best for you.
4. Schedule surgery. Download the forms you'll need to complete before surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the office on the day of surgery. Also, plan to take a few days off to let your eyes recover. See our FAQ for details.
5. The day of surgery. Once you become accustomed to the sound of the laser, drops will be placed in your eye to numb it. You will sit in a reclining chair and the doctor will position your head under the laser. A retainer will be placed between your eyelids to gently hold them open. The doctor will access the cornea., then you will be asked to focus on a blinking red light while the laser removes microscopic amounts of tissue from the cornea. This step takes less than one minute. Some drops and a protective bandage lens or shield will be placed on your eye for protection. Your total time in the laser center will last from 30 minutes and 1 hour. See our FAQ.
6. After surgery. While the actual procedure is painless due to the numbing drops, you will experience some slight irritation or mild discomfort immediately after lasik surgery. You will receive topical and oral medications to help in the post-operative period. Some other vision correction methods may be used which cause a longer recovery period. See our FAQ to learn more about what activities you should avoid after surgery.
