Age‑related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in older adults. As the U.S. population ages, the number of those afflicted and the severity of their blindness is increasing.
Our research seeks to better understand what causes age-related macular degeneration, to provide new surgical and drug treatment, and to develop new ways for rapid monitoring of progression to facilitate evaluation of new drugs.
Currently, we are looking for families with multiple generations who have been affected by AMD. By studying these families, we hope to find the genetic links and associations that cause vision loss. Learn more about this study.
We are also investigating infrared imaging for early detection and longitudinal monitoring of AMD, and the role of fatty acid biosynthesis in macular disease.
